Lucinda's Message

Lucinda Bassett photoHello! My name is Lucinda Bassett.

The Attacking Anxiety program you have inquired about is a result of my personal struggles with anxiety. My initial experiences with anxiety began when I was 9 years old as scary thoughts and feelings of unreality. As I got older my problems progressed. I had bouts of irritable bowel syndrome, "nervous stomach", I developed eating disorders and I worried constantly about everything. FOR DECADES I SUFFERED SEVERE PANIC ATTACKS It was in my twenties that I began to experience panic attacks. I became extremely fearful and began limiting my activities in an attempt to eliminate the feelings of anxiety. I had difficulty driving, flying and even sitting in meetings. I visited doctor after doctor and spent a small fortune looking for the cause of my feelings. I literally thought I was going insane.

I LEARNED THAT THE SOURCE OF MY PANIC ATTACKS
          WAS ANXIETY

  • Late one night I was extremely depressed and I prayed to God asking him to show me one person who had survived these feelings. I promised I would serve him the rest of my life, although
    I wasn't quite sure how.
The next morning I was getting ready for work and had turned the television on. I wasn't really watching but I began to tune in. There was a woman talking about anxiety and panic, she was describing the personality characteristics: analytical thinking, perfectionism, emotionally sensitive, and negative thinking. She talked about the fear of losing control and dying, of constantly being afraid of embarrassing yourself and the fear of strange body symptoms. She was talking about me. For the first time I knew what was affecting me and thus began my journey to solve my problem.

I LEARNED ALL THAT I COULD ABOUT ANXIETY AND BEGAN
TO TAKE CONTROL OF MY LIFE

  • I went immediately to the library and book stores taking home every book I could find about anxiety and panic. Unfortunately it was the early 1980's and little was known about this condition at that time. Just knowing that my problem was anxiety was a great relief. The more I learned I slowly began to take control of my life.
I went to my doctor, Phillip Fisher M.D. and he was amazed at the difference in me. I was calm, confident and all of my symptoms had disappeared. I told him about my experience and all of my research and how much better I felt. He explained that he had dozens of people in his practice suffering with the same symptoms and asked if I would consider assisting him with self help groups.
This was in 1984 and the beginning of the
Midwest Center for Stress and Anxiety, Inc.

I BEGAN TO SHARE WHAT I HAD LEARNED

  • To help build public awareness about anxiety and the Midwest Center, I began doing interviews about my condition. Coming out of the closet was very difficult. I worried about what people would think of me.
But as I continued to talk about my problem not only did I gain more control, but I was amazed at the number of people I touched who were suffering with the same problem. Our groups at the Midwest Center in Toledo prospered and word of our success traveled, people began calling us from Cleveland to Los Angeles. They called searching for help for relatives and friends in cities all over the world. Could we help them?
Dr. Fisher suggested we put the program on audio cassette tape. He said these were skills people could learn on their own if given the proper direction.

      THE FIRST PUBLIC SEMINAR

  • In 1986 we conducted our first public seminar to sell the tapes in my home town in Findlay, Ohio. Imagine my amazement when over 200 people flooded the room. I received incredible feedback from the seminar attendees and many became home study participants. As time went on, people who had recovered asked if they could conduct seminars for us and since 1986 the Midwest Center continues to conduct over 250 free seminars annually in the US, Canada and the UK. In 1989 we began production of our infomercial as an extension of our seminar business. It took one and one half years to complete and went on the air in 1991.
We have been nothing short of astonished and proud of the effect the ATTACKING ANXIETY program has had on people's lives.

ANXIETY IS NOT A MENTAL ILLNESS

  • I would say the vast majority still do not know or understand what they are suffering with. They may have gone to the doctor and complained about their symptoms, the doctor may have indicated that it was stress or anxiety and perhaps prescribed medication. It is highly unlikely that your doctor could have spent enough time with you to truly help you, not because they didn't want to, but because they didn't know how.
Medication, unfortunately, treats the symptoms, it really does little to treat the actual cause. Treating the cause is where complete recovery lies.

SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN HELPED

  • Over the past 12 years the skills of the ATTACKING ANXIETY program have been used by over a hundred thousand of people. The program is an outgrowth of our outpatient clinical treatment program for anxiety, panic disorder and agoraphobia. The Midwest Center's staff includes M.D.'s, Psychologists, and Psychiatrists, but the people who have contributed their time and personal experiences on these tapes have offered just as much. You will recognize yourself many times in this program. The program is cognitive behavioral in format. We will teach you to recognize your behaviors and reactions and offer ways to change those negative, anxiety producing behaviors and reactions. You will also learn many coping strategies which will help you to alleviate your symptoms and calm your fears.

YOU CAN CONQUER ANXIETY AT YOUR OWN PACE

  • The methodology of using audio cassette tapes ideally suits this disorder. This format allows you to listen to the material time and time again at your own pace, (until it sinks in). Obviously it would be wonderful to have a therapist who could sit with you whenever you needed them to help you on your journey to recovery. First, few could afford it, secondly the goal of the program is to teach you to rely on your own skills for recovery.
No matter how mild or severe your problem is, you can be helped by this program. You may wonder how this program helps people with varying degrees of the disorder? Basically,
all anxiety is addressed in much the same way; complete understanding of the cause and effect, comprehension and implementation of proven coping skills, including exposure to the individual fears and concerns. If even one of these elements is missing, complete recovery is almost impossible. ATTACKING ANXIETY will help anyone who suffers with anxiety as their primary source of concern.

YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE FOREVER

  • You may be thinking that your situation is different. You think you have had the problem too long, or you've tried everything, or you are worse than other people. Looking through our literature, you will notice the common fears and personality traits. If you identify with even a couple of these, we can help you. Your best chance of recovery lies in the program.
If you spend the time and do what is suggested, you will make progress, take control of your anxiety and change your life forever.

WHAT IS ANXIETY COSTING YOU TODAY?

  • You may think the expense of $360 is a lot of money. You're right,
$360 is a lot of money. We have payment plans which make the program affordable for nearly everyone. What is it costing you to stay anxious? How does your anxiety affect your peace of mind or quality of life?
How does it affect your ability to make decisions and make commitments? How does it affect your family, your relationships, your sense of independence? You don't have to worry constantly about your health, your sanity and your life. You can take control. You are about to begin a journey which will change the way you approach life forever.
